Familjen Hellgren
Vid pilen Anna Christina Johansdotter. Fotot och namnen på familjemedlemmarna har jag fått
av Barbara Cintado i Northbrook, Illinois. Hon är dotterdotter till Ellsworth Hellgren. som sitter
i sin mors knä till vänster på bilden. Ellsworth är i sin tur sonson till Anna Christina. Han
avled i februari år 2000.

Anna Christina Johansdotter föddes 1845 i Backgården, Orrleka by, Fröjered.
Vid födseln är föräldrarna  antecknade som "Bondfolk i Backgården"

Anna Christina flyttar till Skövde 1862. Arbetar där som piga hos olika arbets-
givare, ett år hade hon även anställning i Stockholm.

Gifter sig 1872 med skomakaren Bernhard (Bernt) Hellgren. Familjen bor under
åren 1872-89 i följande ordning på tomterna 49-100-49-48-17-55-10-106-101-49,
i Skövde.

Bernhard Hellgren avreser 1887-02-11 till USA och Anna Christina och familjens
fyra barn följer efter 1889-05-03. Avresorna sker från Göteborg till Hull, vid båda
tillfällena med ångfartyget "Romeo". Vanligt var att resan från Hull gick vidare per
järnväg till Liverpool och därefter med ny båt till New York.

Resan för Anna Christina och barnen gick inte helt friktionsfritt, vilket framgår av
följande berättelse från Barbara Cintado. Den förtjänar att återberättas:


   "I will pass on what information I have about the descendants of Anna
   (Johansd.) Hellgren and Bernhard Hellgren. As the story has been told to me,
   Bernhard came ahead of the rest of the family in order to begin the settling
   process and save money for the family's passage across the Atlantic. He sent
   Anna and the children second-class passage and arranged for the family's trip
   from New York to Chicago. In 1889 when Anna and the children were on the
   ship to New York, the ship's crew went on strike. This delayed their arrival in
   New York and consequently in Chicago as well.
  
   As there was no way to communicate with Bernard about the delay, he went to
   meet every train on that line for 2 or 3 days, became exhausted and went home.
   Of course they arrived just after he went home. All they had was a slip of paper
   with the address. Upon finding themselves in a strange city and country and
   unable to speak a word of English, Anna and the four children sat down and
   cried. A kind Norwegian man came to their aid and took them in his horse-drawn
   wagon to the street on the slip of paper. At 2:00 in the morning they began
   knocking on doors to find the right house. Awakened by all of the commotion,
   Bernhard realized that his family had arrived and ran out in the street in his
   underwear. All the neighbors came out and they had a bit of a celebration
   together in the street in the middle of the night!"
  
   (It's fortunate for all of us that someone thought to put this story down on
   paper for future generations, Barbara says.).

Anna Christina Johansdotter Hellgren avlider i Chicago 1916 och Bernhard
Hellgren år 1926. De ligger båda begravda på kyrkogården "Forest Home" i Chicago.
